Important Information about Safety & Rules
Spot Description:
Britannia Bay, next to Britannia Yacht Club is one of the most popular spots for Ottawa riders as it has lots of shallow water, it's near downtown and it can accommodate almost 75% of the wind we have in Ottawa. The other reason is that for most good days in Ottawa, there is normally a W element in the wind direction and Britannia has the best W and NW wind for the whole region - many miles of clearance upwind.
The best time of year to go kiting here is in Spring and Fall. It has a tight launch area between the rock piers, therefore helmets are a good idea.
When on the water at Britannia, there are some other hazards that you need to be aware of, namely (see the map above):
- Rapids just north of the Britannia Yacht Club (watch out for S wind at Britannia as such wind will blow you straight to the rapids)
- Gull-wires over the swimming area at Britannia
- Rock shoal (and some other rocks) on the SW side of the Britannia bay in very low water season.
While there are many kiters who use and enjoy this launch, any mistakes can have serious consequences for either personal safety or maintaining access to this launch. As a result, the local kiting community has put together guidelines for all kiters to follow when riding at Britannia.
